Case Study: Agility in Supply Chain as a Key Factor for Competitiveness and Sustainability - Example of Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Structure!

Globally increasing competition in various sectors has brought supply chain management into a key position to achieve business success and to ensure sustainability. In order to survive in this competitive environment, the firm and other members of the supply chain must be capable of delivering goods and services to consumers as quickly and inexpensively as possible. Especially the focus has been on the unique set of relations between organizations in a supply network to enable the achievement of competitive advantage through lower costs and/or greater differentiation.

Agility is defined as the ability of responding quickly to sudden and sharp changes in demand and supply because of high competitive market conditions. It is the fundamental characteristic of a supply chain needed for survival in turbulent markets, and it further helps in providing the right product, at the right time to the consumer, which is the main objective of all sectoral supply chain structures including the pharmaceutical one. Apart from its specific characteristics, being heavily influenced by global competition, companies in the pharmaceutical sector need to adapt themselves structurally to sustain their existence which puts their supply chain structures forward in terms of significance.
